Japanese mecha has two lineages. Mazinger Z in 1972 established the giant robot a human climbs into and pilots, and Mobile Suit Gundam in 1979 introduced the realistic branch where machines are mass-produced military hardware that needs maintenance. Panel lines are what communicate scale
Scale does not come from drawing something large. It comes from the lines dividing the armour, the hatches, bolts, warning markings, and grime, which together say this is a big object assembled by human hands. The denser that detail, the larger the machine reads. Panel lines, weathering, and painted markings are the terms that get you there.
Armour must break at every joint
What sells a mecha as rigid metal is how the bending points are handled. At shoulders, elbows, knees, and ankles the armour stops and the mechanism underneath shows: cables, pistons, sockets. Smoothing those transitions makes the machine read as a suit or rubber instead. Ask for exposed joints, hydraulic pistons, and cables at the knees.
