What does the tag 1girl mean?

1girl means exactly one female character in the frame. It comes from the tagging system used by Danbooru-style image boards, where character counts are written as 1girl, 2girls, 1boy and so on, and it carried over into AI image generation because most models were trained on captions that use those words. So 1girl is not a style or a genre — it is a count. That is why it appears in more prompts than any other tag: almost every single-character illustration starts with it.

Why nearly every prompt includes it

Character count is the thing image models drift on most. Left unstated, a prompt for a girl in a school uniform can come back with two figures, a duplicated head, or an extra pair of arms at the edge of the frame. Writing 1girl early in the prompt fixes the count and stabilises the composition before anything else is decided. Adding solo alongside it pushes further in the same direction by discouraging background figures.

What to write after 1girl

On its own the tag only settles how many people are in the picture, so the rest of the description does the work. The parts that change the result most are hair colour and eye colour, then framing (upper body, full body, portrait), then clothing and setting. Naming hair and eyes explicitly is worth doing even when you do not care much about them, because leaving them open is what makes repeated generations look inconsistent with each other.
