What pastel illustration looks like

Pastel keeps the whole image inside a narrow, high-key band of colour. There are no deep blacks and no fully saturated hues — shadows are tinted lavender or blue rather than grey, and the strongest colour in the picture is still gentle. Edges are soft, and the medium leaves a slightly powdery, matte surface.

What it is good for

Backgrounds and wallpapers, stationery and packaging art, children’s illustration, and anything that needs to sit behind text without competing with it. The low contrast that makes pastel calm also makes it forgiving: mistakes are less visible than in high-contrast styles.

How it differs from watercolour and pencil drawing

Watercolour has strong contrast between saturated washes and bare paper; pastel stays even throughout. Coloured pencil shows directional hatching strokes, while pastel blends into a smooth field. If you want visible strokes, ask for coloured pencil instead.
