What defines mahou shoujo design
The magical girl genre has a visual grammar that has stayed remarkably stable since the 1990s: a transformation outfit built from a short layered skirt, ribbons and frills, gloves or arm accessories, an ornamented wand or staff, and often a small non-human companion. The palette is bright and high-key, and the design reads as a uniform rather than as clothing the character would otherwise own. Referencing the genre by name pulls all of that in at once.
Colour identity does most of the work
Magical girls are colour-coded, because the convention grew out of teams where each member had to be identifiable at a glance. Choosing one dominant colour and one accent — pink with gold, blue with silver, green with white — makes a single character look like she belongs to a set, which is a large part of why the design language feels right. Using many colours at once produces something that reads as generic fantasy instead.
Showing transformation in a still image
The genre is built around motion that a single frame cannot contain, so the effects stand in for it: ribbons unwinding, trails of light following a hand, sparkles suspended in the air, hair and skirt lifted as if by wind that is not in the scene. Describing one of these rather than all of them keeps the image readable. A low camera angle with the wand raised is the standard composition for the same reason.
