The succubus is a female demon from medieval European tradition, and the name derives from the Latin succubare, to lie beneath. The male counterpart is the incubus, one who lies above. They were described as a pair, which is worth knowing when separating the original folklore from modern fantasy design.
Wings, horns and tail are a modern convention
Folklore gave the succubus no fixed appearance. The now-standard set of bat wings, small horns and an arrow-tipped tail settled through fantasy fiction, and Japanese illustration pushed it further toward the cute koakuma register. Large hard wings read as a Western demon; small rounded ones read as the Japanese little-devil type.
Seduction is drawn with gaze and distance, not costume
