A senko-hanabi is not a Western sparkler
The Japanese senko-hanabi is a twisted paper stem with a small charge at the tip. Western sparklers are metal wires that burn long and bright; the Japanese one produces a tiny fireball and is held pointing downward, usually while crouching. It stands for the end of summer rather than celebration.
It burns in four named stages
Japanese tradition names the phases: bud, peony, pine needle, and scattering chrysanthemum. The pine-needle stage produces the finest spray of sparks and is the one worth drawing. Then the fireball simply falls and it is over — that brevity is the point of the motif.
The light source sits at chest height
Because the spark burns below the face, the lighting is unusual: bright under the chin and nose, shadowed above the eyes. Without specifying that upward light you only get fireworks glowing in the dark. A yukata, an engawa and a bucket of water complete the scene.
