China Dress (Qipao) Art — AI artworks by SUPPART users

The modern qipao took shape in 1920s Shanghai
The garment is called qipao in Mandarin, a name referring to the clothing of the Manchu during the Qing dynasty. The close-fitting silhouette recognised today, however, was developed in Shanghai in the 1920s as fashionable modern dress for women. It is a roughly century-old urban fashion rather than an ancient ethnic costume, and cheongsam is the Cantonese-derived name used in English.
Standing collar, frog buttons, high slit
Three components make a qipao read as a qipao: the mandarin collar standing along the neck, the frog buttons knotted from fabric strips, and the slit that gives the legs room to move. Of these the frog buttons are dropped most often, and without them the garment becomes a generic fitted dress. Name the parts directly: mandarin collar, frog buttons, high slit.
Hanfu differs at both the collar and the sleeve
Hanfu, the other major Chinese garment tradition, crosses at the front with a wide sleeve and does not follow the body. A qipao has a standing collar, a narrow sleeve, and a fitted line. Mixing them blurs the silhouette, so commit to one. Qipao settings tend toward night streets, banquet halls, and 1930s Shanghai; hanfu suits courts and landscapes.
